Roughly 30% of U.S. students were proficient in reading and mathematics.
The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress found 31% of fourth-graders and 30% of eighth-graders at or above NAEP Proficient in reading, and 39% and 28% respectively in mathematics. Those grade-level results support the bounded proposition that proficiency was roughly around 30%, although NAEP publishes separate subject-and-grade measures rather than one combined national percentage, and NAEP Proficient is not synonymous with grade level.

The United States spends twice as much on education as every other country but ranks about 38th to 40th out of 40 countries.
International comparisons do not show the United States spending twice as much as every peer country, and outcome rankings vary by subject and measure rather than placing it uniformly at the bottom of a 40-country table. OECD and federal data place U.S. per-student spending above the international average but below some peers, while recent PISA results put U.S. students above the OECD average in reading and science and below it in mathematics.
